San Joaquin General Hospital Celebrates U.S. Top Honors in Maternity Care and Patient Safety
December 16, 2025

French Camp, CA – San Joaquin General Hospital (SJGH) is celebrating two major achievements that reflect its ongoing commitment to exceptional, patient-centered care. SJGH recently earned a High Performing designation in Maternity Care from U.S. News & World Report and achieved a zero catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) rate from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) — making it one of only two hospitals in San Joaquin County to earn both distinctions.

“Achieving a zero CAUTI rate and earning U.S. News & World Report’s High Performing designation for Maternity Care are powerful reflections of the commitment demonstrated every day by the staff of San Joaquin General Hospital,” said Richard Castro, CEO of SJGH. “Our team’s dedication to excellence ensures that every patient in San Joaquin County receives exceptional, compassionate, and safe care. These achievements highlight not only our clinical expertise, but our deep responsibility to the community we proudly serve.”

The U.S. News High Performing designation in maternity care is based on key quality measures such as C-section rates among lower-risk pregnancies, unexpected newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding, and birth-friendly practices. Together, these outcomes help families make informed decisions about where to welcome their newest additions.

In addition to excellence in maternity care, SJGH recorded a zero CAUTI rate according to the latest Healthcare-Associated Infections dataset from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. This accomplishment reflects the hospital’s strong infection-prevention practices and its commitment to maintaining a safe environment for every patient.

U.S. News began rating maternity hospitals in 2021. For the 2026 edition, approximately 900 hospitals submitted detailed data.

“Hospitals designated as a U.S. News Best Hospital for Maternity Care are national leaders," said Jennifer Winston, Ph.D., Health Data Scientist at U.S. News. “This recognition means they are consistently hitting crucial patient safety benchmarks compared to other hospitals. It’s a clear signal to expectant parents about where the highest standards of care are being practiced.”

The CMS CAUTI rate is based on CDC-developed infection-prevention measures and adjusts for patient age, health status, hospital size, lab methods, and the type of care provided. These measures apply across adult, pediatric, neonatal, Medicare, and non-Medicare populations in acute care hospitals.
