Public Defender

Established as a County department in 1968, the San Joaquin County Public Defender’s Office is dedicated to ensuring justice and protecting the constitutional rights of individuals who cannot afford private legal representation. Together, our team manages more than 1,800 cases each month.

Our Mission

The San Joaquin County Public Defender’s Office fights to ensure fairness and equal justice by providing compassionate, zealous representation. We are committed to protecting the constitutional rights and stability of all individuals, regardless of income or circumstance.

Our Vision

The San Joaquin County Public Defender’s Office is dedicated to leveling the playing field and ensuring that the justice system is rooted in fairness and dignity. We earn the trust of our clients and community through our engagement in and out of the courtroom. Through our loyal, zealous advocacy and representation for each client, we elevate their voices and demand the state’s recognition of their rights. By pursuing justice and stability for our clients within the community, we help lay the foundation for lasting change and strengthen the integrity of the criminal legal system.
