French Camp, CA — San Joaquin General Hospital (SJGH) proudly announces the appointment of Philip Y. Cheng, MD, MBA as the new Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Dr. Cheng is triple trained in Pediatrics, Neonatology, and Pediatric Cardiology, a rare and distinguished combination held by only a small number of physicians nationwide. His unique expertise brings world-class care to the newborns and families of San Joaquin County.

He completed his General Pediatrics residency in Fresno, followed by a Neonatology fellowship at the University of California, San Diego, and most recently, a Pediatric Cardiology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.

Before joining SJGH, Dr. Cheng served as NICU Medical Director and Chief of Pediatrics at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, where he led the creation of the hospital’s first pediatric hospitalist program. His visionary leadership helped expand pediatric services and significantly improved outcomes for neonatal patients throughout the region.

“Joining San Joaquin General Hospital was an easy decision for me,” said Dr. Cheng. “As NICU Medical Director, my mission is deeply rooted in caring for the most vulnerable newborns and supporting the families of San Joaquin County. I’m proud to be part of a team that’s dedicated to delivering compassionate care, right here in the Valley, across all socioeconomic levels.”

SJGH Chief Executive Officer Richard Castro echoed the sentiment. “We are pleased to welcome Dr. Cheng and the exceptional expertise he brings to our NICU. His rare combination of advanced medical training and compassion reflects the very best of what we strive to offer at SJGH. What makes this especially meaningful is his connection to San Joaquin County, giving us a personal stake in making our NICU thrive to the benefit of our community."

Renovated in 2019, the SJGH Level III NICU serves over 400 patients annually. The 34,000 square foot space provides 25 beds and two spacious bonding suites accommodating overnight stays. Visit this link for more information.
