Registrar of Voters
The Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee Period Opens for Potential Candidates Interested in running for candidacy in the March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Election
September 13, 2023

Stockton, CA - The San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters Office announced the signatures in lieu of filing fee period will begin on September 14, 2023, for the March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Election. Candidates may submit a signatures in lieu petition (also called petitions in lieu) instead of paying a fee in order to run for certain offices. The signatures in lieu petition is intended to cover all or any prorated portion of the filing fee required to run for certain offices.

The signatures in lieu petitions may be obtained from the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters office. Only valid signatures from registered voters within the jurisdiction of the office will be used to reduce fees. The number of signatures required to cover the filing fee varies by office and will be verified by the Candidate Services Division. If the full amount of signatures to offset the filing fee are not gathered, that portion of the filing fee not covered by the signatures will need to be paid in full before the candidate can obtain their nomination documents.

Candidates for the following voter-nominated and nonpartisan offices may submit signatures in lieu petitions:

Voter-Nominated Offices

United States Senator
United States Representative in Congress: 9th and 13th Congressional Districts
Member of the State Senate: 5th Senatorial District
Member of the State Assembly: 9th and 13th Assembly Districts

Nonpartisan Offices

Judge of the Superior Court: Offices 1-17
San Joaquin County Board of Supervisor: 1st, 3rd, and 5th Supervisorial Districts
