Much-Anticipated Pershing Avenue Improvements Nearing Completion
September 29, 2022

(Stockton, CA) – San Joaquin County is pleased to announce that the much-anticipated improvements to Pershing Avenue from Meadow Avenue to Thornton Road in north Stockton are nearly complete.

The Pershing Avenue Improvements Project, funded by the Measure K half-cent sales tax, has widened Pershing Avenue to include a two-way left turn lane, new sidewalks, and buffered bicycle lanes (south of Hammer Lane only). The project’s utility infrastructure improvements include a new storm drainage system and water supply pipelines north of Hammer Lane.

The County also partnered with the City of Stockton to close the sidewalk gap along the west side of Pershing Avenue from Lincoln Road to Meadow Avenue as an addition to the County’s project. This additional sidewalk within the City will complement the County’s improvements and requires only two additional weeks of work beyond the originally scheduled September 30, 2022, completion. To facilitate construction of the additional sidewalk, Pershing Avenue between Meadow Avenue and Thornton Road will remain closed to through traffic until October 14, 2022. Extension of the road closure will provide a safer work zone and travel route for construction crews and the traveling public.

“I am excited to see these roadway improvements nearing completion,” said San Joaquin County District 2 Supervisor Kathy Miller. “Years of planning and collaboration have resulted in the community’s concept becoming a reality. The improved roadway will provide a safer and more convenient means of transportation for area residents and the traveling public.”

“Completion of this project will improve traffic conditions and provide safer options for pedestrians and cyclists in the area,” said San Joaquin County Public Works Director, Fritz Buchman. “The extension of the sidewalk into Stockton city limits is an added bonus for the community. Closing the sidewalk gap was a priority for the City and local schools, and we were happy to collaborate and help make it happen.”

Drivers are recommended to continue using Hammer Lane, Pacific Avenue, and Benjamin Holt Drive as alternative routes around the construction zone. Construction activities will continue to be performed Monday through Friday, from 7 am to 7 pm.
