Pershing Avenue Widening and Alexandria Place Culvert Replacement Update
July 20, 2022

(Stockton, CA) – San Joaquin County and the City of Stockton provided an update today on continued construction of critical infrastructure improvements on Pershing Avenue and Alexandria Place.

The County’s Pershing Avenue Widening from Meadow Avenue to Thornton Road in north Stockton has completed all major underground work for the storm drainage and water supply pipelines. In addition, the sidewalk installation along Pershing Avenue, south of Hammer Lane, is nearly complete. Preparation of the sidewalk installation along Pershing Avenue north of Hammer Lane has begun.

The County will begin the first phase of reconstructing/resurfacing the pavement south of Hammer Lane, on July 20, 2022. To facilitate this phase of work, the intersection of Meadow Avenue and Pershing Avenue will be temporarily closed to all traffic beginning July 25, 2022, for up to five (5) days.

Drivers are directed by signage to use Hammer Lane, Pacific Avenue, and Benjamin Holt Drive as alternate routes around the construction zones.

“We understand the added inconvenience of this short-term closure and are committed to re-opening the intersection as soon as possible,” said Public Works Director Fritz Buchman. “We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding during the final phases of this important project.”

Upon project completion, Pershing Avenue will include a two-way left turn lane, sidewalk improvements, and buffered bicycle lanes (south of Hammer Lane only). Utility infrastructure improvements include new storm drainage and water supply pipelines north of Hammer Lane. The project remains on schedule to complete work by September 30, 2022.

The City of Stockton’s Alexandria Culvert Replacement project continues to progress with demolition and removal of the existing culvert. The City and County are coordinating construction activities, and the City’s project is scheduled to be complete by September 29, 2022.

“The continued coordination with the County on impacts to the traveling public is critical,“ said City Manager Harry Black. “The City appreciates the County’s commitment to expedite the intersection work to minimize these impacts. Jointly, we are also exploring opportunities to increase pedestrian access as the projects progress.”

The project teams will continue to provide regular updates during construction through their social media channels and websites at www.sjgov.org and www.stocktonca.gov.
