Board of Supervisors Blocks County Fee Hikes, Calls for Greater Fiscal Discipline
May 12, 2026

Stockton, CA - The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors voted to deny fiscal year 2026-2027 county fee increases, asking departments to cut costs and live within the current fee structures without raising fees across county services and departments. The vote ensures fees paid by residents for services remain constant while health care departments can seek reimbursements for services provided.

“Keeping fees down means more money in the pockets of our hard-working business owners and community members,” said Board Vice-Chair and District 4 Supervisor Steven Ding who led the charge to block fee increases on business. “This is not the board’s money to spend. But it’s our money to steward and act with fiscal responsibility.”

Some fees for departments, including the Registrar of Voters and Department of Public Works, decreased or were eliminated, showing County departments’ commitment to keeping costs low for residents, to decrease duplication, to streamline services, and to make the department fee structure easier to understand and more consistent.

The decision impacts the following departments:

  • Environmental Health Department
  • Registrar of Voters
  • Behavioral Health Services
  • San Joaquin General Hospital
  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Sheriff’s Office
  • Public Guardian/Conservator
  • Stockton Metropolitan Airport
  • Public Health Services
  • Treasurer-Tax Collector
  • Public Works
