Stockton, CA – The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors voted on Monday to close County offices on Friday, December 26, 2025, aligning with the federal government’s holiday closure following Christmas this year. As a result of the Board’s action, most County offices will be closed to the public that day. Essential County services will continue without interruption, including law enforcement, emergency response, and hospital operations.
Employees who are required to work in mandatory 24-hour positions or essential workers on December 26 will have the day treated as a holiday and be paid accordingly, consistent with their labor agreements.
Board Chair Paul Canepa voiced his support for the additional time off, emphasizing the importance of honoring frontline workers who remain on duty to keep the community safe during the holidays. “This is a time of year centered on family, gratitude, and service. While many County employees will be able to spend this extra day with loved ones, our law enforcement officers, hospital staff, and other essential workers will continue to serve our community. This action makes sure their commitment is recognized and honored.”
District 5 Supervisor Robert Rickman, who called for the special meeting, said the decision reflects the Board’s commitment to recognizing the dedication and year-round service of County employees. “Good government starts with valuing the people who do the work. Our county employees serve this community with dedication every day of the year. Providing the day after Christmas off is a small but meaningful way to thank them and give them time to rest, reflect, and spend time with their families.”
The Board directed Human Resources Director Jennifer Goodman to work with employee unions to finalize agreements needed to implement the closure. Any necessary follow-up approvals will be ratified at the Board’s next regular meeting on January 13, 2026.
