Stockton, CA – The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors today approved key zoning and planning measures clearing the way for construction of the new SJ BeWell Campus, a major investment in behavioral health care that will serve residents across the County.
The advanced, high-caliber campus will provide a comprehensive range of services including substance use disorder treatment, crisis stabilization, outpatient care, residential treatment, and supportive transitional housing. The project, developed through more than two years of collaboration among County departments, is designed to streamline access to treatment and help residents recover and rebuild their lives.
“This is a once-in-a-generation investment in the future of behavioral health care for the County,” said Board Chair Paul Canepa. “The SJ BeWell Campus will not only change lives; it will rewrite futures for countless people and families. This is the kind of bold action our community has been waiting for—a real, lasting solution to urgent needs with compassionate, coordinated care at its heart.”
The 18-acre campus will feature two distinct areas:
- South Campus – 211,250 square feet of facilities, including a 76,000-square-foot Community and Outpatient Services building, a 35,250-square-foot Urgent Care Services building with 42 beds, and two Residential Treatment Program buildings totaling 132 beds. The campus will also include Public Health staff and an urgent care clinic operated by SJ Health Centers, creating an integrated whole health model that seamlessly combines behavioral health and primary care services to better serve both patients on campus and the community at large.
- North Campus – 150,360 square feet with 10 Supportive Transitional Housing buildings offering a total of 252 beds, along with space for supportive services and community amenities.
Outdoor spaces, on-site support programs, and integrated service models will ensure patients have access to comprehensive care in one location. Construction is set to begin this fall, with a formal groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for early September.
The SJ BeWell Campus reflects the County’s commitment to proactive, long-term solutions for behavioral health needs while strengthening public health, improving quality of life, and reducing strain on emergency services.
