This is the first year the San Joaquin County EMS Award of Excellence is being issued and will continue annually during EMS Week. Recipients of this award are recognized for their efforts and dedication to improving the EMS system in San Joaquin County, being a mentor and supporter of other EMS system participants, providing valuable education and feedback to the EMS system, and a commitment to helping others in our community.

Ms. Garcia is recognized by her peers and other leaders for her desire to mentor and teach. Ms. Garcia has been pivotal in efforts to change the stigma related to EMS personnel mental health by sharing her own personal accounts of struggles. In addition, Ms. Garcia has invited EMS families to participate in training academy education to talk about the stress and mental health risks associated with EMS work, introduced education on post-traumatic stress syndrome, and provides mental health resources to her staff.

Ms. Garcia started her life’s work at the age of fourteen as a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Medical Center (SJMC). While working as a volunteer, she discovered her passion for medicine and serving her community. Ms. Garcia started her professional path in EMS in 2001 as an EMT working at SJMC Emergency Department as an ED Tech. In 2009, she attended a National College of Technical Instruction (NCTI) paramedic program and finished at the top of her class where she also started her internship in San Joaquin County. Once she obtained her paramedic license, she began working at American Medical Response (AMR) San Joaquin County. During her thirteen years with AMR, Ms. Garcia has promoted successfully as a paramedic, paramedic field training officer, preceptor, and now serves as a Clinical Education Supervisor.

Despite challenges and setbacks over the course of her own career, Ms. Garcia continues to have a positive attitude and a desire to improve the EMS system.
