Paramedic Student Field Intern Authorization


Effective January 1, 2011, all paramedics interns in San Joaquin County must be authorized by San Joaquin County EMS Agency.

How Do I Become Authorized?

Authorization
  1. Be in good standing in an approved paramedic program.
  2. Submit a completed Paramedic Intern Application.
  3. Submit a copy of a current valid California EMT certification card.
  4. A copy (front and back) of your current CPR card for the Professional Rescuer or Healthcare Provider issued from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or another program approved by the SJCEMSA.
  5. Submit a copy of valid state identification card (i.e., driver's license) or valid federal identification (i.e., military identification).
  6. Be assigned by an approved paramedic training program for field internship in San Joaquin County with form 4301A, Paramedic Field Internship Registration Form.
  7. Must attend and successfully pass the Paramedic Accreditation Orientation (PAO) course.
    *PAO prerequisites: MICR, X-Collar, and LUCAS 3 Chest Compression System certificates.
The intern will be issued a paramedic student internship authorization card. The card shall be carried at all times while functioning as an intern.

Paramedic Accreditation Orientation (PAO) Schedule And Registration

Course prerequisites: Minimally Interrupted Cardiac Resuscitation (MICR) video, X- Collarâ„¢ and LUCAS 3 Chest Compression Device certificates  Click here to access courses.

You must be pre-registered to attend PAO. Click here to view schedule and register.  This course is only open to paramedics applying for initial accreditation and paramedic field internships. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What happens if my EMT certification expires during my internship?

You will have to apply for an extension and provide your new EMT certification card to receive the remaining time of your field internship.

Q: What happens if during my internship, my preceptor is no longer available?

You will need to contact your paramedic training program and have them complete a new 4301A, Paramedic Field Internship Registration Form with another preceptor assignment and submit it to the SJCEMSA.
