IMPROVING SAFETY AND CONNECTIVITY IN THORNTON
The San Joaquin County Department of Public Works is planning improvements at the intersection of Walnut Grove Road and Sacramento Boulevard to create safer travel for people driving, walking, and bicycling.
The project includes:
- Constructing a new roundabout
- Adding new pedestrian walkways
- Building a shared-use path for walking/bicycling
- Enhanced safety and connections for residents, particularly children traveling between New Hope Elementary School and community destinations.
Roundabouts provide many benefits to pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists. Unlike traditional intersections, at a roundabout, vehicles travel in one direction around a central island, yielding to vehicles already in the roundabout. This design helps improve safety and traffic flow while reducing environmental impacts.
There are many benefits to using roundabouts in intersections:
- Reduced vehicles idling times and car emissions
- Safer pedestrian crossings
- Improved safety for pedestrians and bicyclists
- Decreased risk of car accidents, especially severe crashes
- Enhanced traffic flow with fewer delays
