The Harrison Elementary Active Transportation Improvements Project will improve school and neighborhood access and safety by installing new sidewalks, new bike lanes, and enhanced crosswalks along Alpine Avenue, E Street, Sanguinetti Lane, Wilson Way, Belvedere Avenue, and Mistletoe Avenue. The project will also include a new traffic signal at the intersection of Wilson Way and E Street.
In 2021 the County conducted a Complete Streets Safety Assessment and walking audit of the project area that showed deficiencies and safety concerns in the area’s transportation infrastructure. Concerns included sidewalk gaps, bicycle lane gaps, lighting, crosswalks, and accessibility per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A lack of dedicated pedestrian and bicycle facilities can lead to uneasiness for pedestrians and cyclists and discourage walking and bicycling within the neighborhood.
To address these concerns, the San Joaquin County Department of Public Works applied for and received an Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant through the California Transportation Commission in 2023. The grant provides funding to design and construct new sidewalks, accessibility improvements per the ADA, enhanced street crossings, and new buffered bike lanes in the project area.
While most work will occur within the County right-of-way, to accommodate the improvements, residents fronting along the Project roadways will experience a number of changes including:
Project design is currently underway. There will be a public meeting on October 15, 2025, at the Harrison Elementary School Cafeteria/Multi-Purpose Room at 3203 Sanguinetti Lane from 6:00-7:30 pm. A presentation will be provided to give a general overview of the Project and will share preliminary design plans with neighbors and property owners.
