San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas announced defendant Sergio Torres was found guilty of charges relating to the June 2022 homicide of his wife, Sonia Suarez.

The defendant was found guilty of PC 187 First Degree Murder, and PC 12022.53(D) enhancement for use of a firearm.  

The collaborative efforts of law enforcement, particularly the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, played a pivotal role in the apprehension of the defendant, who was located in Nebraska. The investigation conducted by the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office not only brought a fugitive to justice but also showcased the dedication and professionalism of our law enforcement community.

"In the pursuit of justice, we have confronted the darkness that shrouded the heinous act committed by Sergio Torres, said District Attorney Ron Freitas. “Today's murder conviction serves as a solemn reminder that domestic violence will be met with the full force of the law. We stand undaunted in our commitment to protect the vulnerable and seek justice for the victims who have suffered in silence."

Additionally, we extend our gratitude to Judge Seth Hoyt, whose discernment and commitment were instrumental during the proceedings. His steadfast adherence to the principles of justice has contributed to the resolution of this tragic case.

Sergio Torres will be sentenced on February 5, 2024.
