Legacy of Leadership

Established as a County department in 1968, the San Joaquin County Public Defender’s Office is dedicated to ensuring justice and protecting the constitutional rights of individuals who cannot afford private legal representation.

Today, the office is led by Public Defender Judyanne Vallado (2024–present), following a strong legacy of leadership that includes:

  • Miriam Lyell (2016–2024)
  • Peter Fox (2008–2016)
  • James L. Larsen (2005–2008)
  • Gerald L. Gleeson (1991–2005)
  • Loren Mandel (1990)
  • Robert N. Chargin (1968–1989)
