Smoke Detectors

  Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors should be disposed of as hazardous waste. Some smoke detectors may contain the radioactive isotope called americium-241, a synthetic element related to plutonium production.

RADIOACTIVE SMOKE DETECTORS have the radioactive symbol similar to picture to the right.  The detector’s manufacturer is required by law to properly dispose of radioactive material, so please send it back to the manufacturer. The manufacturer’s address should be on the detector itself or included with the instructions/warranty. If you can't find it, look up the manufacturer on the internet.  Please refer to list below of manufacturers to contact for return.

NON-RADIOACTIVE SMOKE DETECTORS do not have the radioactive symbol similar to picture to the right.  Smoke detectors that lack the radioactive symbol as pictured above may be disposed of at San Joaquin County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility for recycling and proper disposal.
