Tires

Tires On average, there is one used tire generated for every person every year.  In the state of California, this amounts to over 35 million used tires annually; in San Joaquin County alone, this amounts to about 700,000 used tires of various sizes.  With the typical weight of a tire at 20 pounds, this means that 7000 tons of used tires generated.    Used tires can be brought to San Joaquin County facilities for proper disposal. State law allows for no more than 9 tires to be transported without a waste tire hauling permit and manifest.

In San Joaquin County and throughout the State of California, recycling used tires keeps a valuable resource out of our landfills. All tires collected at County facilities are sent to a certified tire recycler here in California. The recycler grinds the rubber, preparing it to be made into a variety of products, including rubber bark for gardens and playgrounds, city streets and sidewalks, and floor mats.

Check Out the New Green Roads Program website from CalRecycle.

CalRecycle has developed a website to provide information about tire-derived products and its “Green Roads” campaign. The website, Paving Green Roads, has a multitude of online resources that your members will find useful and informative.
