SHERIFF'S CITIZEN ACADEMY
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is committed to providing the citizens of San Joaquin County with the highest level of service to enhance their quality of life by promoting harmony within the county.
The Citizens Academy program is designed to acquaint citizens with the organization and internal workings of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. The program is intended to raise community awareness of Sheriff’s operations and training, and enhance law enforcement community relations.
The program is projected to reach members of the community simply seeking to become more informed on law enforcement issues, and those contemplating careers with the Sheriff’s office in any capacity.
The overall focus of the program is to provide a better understanding of the policies and procedures of the department, as well as the approach taken to provide law enforcement services to San Joaquin County.
The program is offered in one sessions a year. The session has six (6) consecutive class meetings each scheduled on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm and offers both classroom and “hands-on" instruction by deputy sheriffs, correctional officers, supervisors, civilian employees and command staff whose assignments or expertise are specific to their subject of training. School Resource Officer Program
Citizens who are interested in attending the academy may fill out an application available on the Sheriff’s Office Web Site or via return mail by calling (209) 468-4495. Upon acceptance to the program a fee of $20.00 (Twenty Dollars) will be collected at the first meeting. This fee helps defray the costs of a Sheriff’s Academy T-shirt, class materials and a small graduation gathering.
Due to the limited number of spaces, not everyone will be able to participate. We will accept approximately 35 students. Applicants will be selected on a first come first served basis pending completion of the required background check. Therefore, you will be notified if you have been selected to attend. Academy classes will be held in the future and a waiting will be established.
Because of the sensitive nature of law enforcement, a brief background check will be conducted to ensure that you meet our eligibility requirements and must maintain your eligibility while attending the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy.
To Participate in the Citizen’s Academy:
1. You must live or work in San Joaquin County.
2. Be 18 years of age,
3. Hold a valid California Drivers License.
4. Have no pending criminal cases or outstanding warrants for your arrest.
5. Have NO FELONY convictions anywhere, and or NO MISDEMEANOR arrests in the past 12 months.
