Stockton – Today, District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar announced that James Brummett, Jr., age 50, was sentenced on Monday, January 13, 2020, to 19 years in state prison on the following charges Penal Code §192(a) (voluntary manslaughter) and Vehicle Code §20001(b)(2) (felony hit and run), he also admitted to having a prior strike conviction pursuant to Penal Code §192(a) and admitted to serving a prior prison term pursuant to Penal Code §667(a). Although he would normally be entitled to 15% conduct credit he waived his custody credits and will actually serve the full term.

Stockton – Today, District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar announced that Zulma Chavez, age 22, pleaded guilty on Tuesday January 14, 2020, to one count of second degree murder (Penal code §187(a)), and two counts of felony child abuse/endangerment (Penal Code §273(a)(a)) for the November killing of her four year old step-daughter. The Honorable John Soldati of the San Joaquin County Superior Court will sentence her on March 2, 2020. She will be sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison.

Stockton – Today, District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar announced that the Honorable Charlotte Orcutt sentenced Jesse Adrian Esparza, age 24, to 120 years to life in state prison on January 6, 2020, for the murder of victim, Ricardo Valenzuela, Jr., and the attempted murders of Ernesto and Thomas Valenzuela, on Valentines’ Day 2017. This crime occurred in the 1600 block of Bonaire Circle. Mr. Esparza was also sentenced for a prior robbery and attempted murder he committed in 2016. Mr. Esparza will be eligible for his first parole board hearing after serving 25 actual years in prison because of the ‘youthful offender’ law codified in Penal Code §3051.”

A jury convicted him on December 21, 2018, for the attempted, premeditated murders of four minors on July 12, 2014, along with the additional attempted murder of Shabrina Taylor on December 15, 2014.

Stockton – Today, District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar announced that Aaron “Lash” Moore was sentenced on Monday December 2, 2019, to 115 years to life, plus an additional 99 years and 8 months in state prison for four counts of first degree attempted murder (Penal Code § 664/187), one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm (Penal Code § 245(b)), and three counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling (Penal Code § 246). Each count had additional firearm and gang enhancements alleged. Because Moore qualifies as a “youthful offender” under the law, he will have his first parole hearing during his twenty-fifth year of incarceration, which will be in 2042. (Penal Code § 3051.)

Stockton – Today, District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar announced that Raymond Austin Hassan Jacquett IV was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison for his role in the shooting death of Dr. Thomas Shock in Lodi, California on August 1, 2018. Stockton - Today, District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar announced that Michael McPherson, age 33, was sentenced to 26 years to life in state prison for the brutal slaying of Elvin Rash,Sr., in downtown Stockton in the area of Hunter and Sonora Streets on February 9, 2019. He also stabbed and severely injured John Johnson and Randy Martel and was sentenced to life terms for their attempted murders to run concurrent to the murder sentence.
