DA Verber Salazar Issues Statement on Uvalde, Texas Shooting

On behalf of everyone at the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, we offer our thoughts, prayers, and most importantly, our strength to Texas.

This year is the 33rd anniversary of our community’s own tragic mass shooting at Cleveland School. We know first-hand what a tragic event such as this does to families, survivors, and a community as a whole. You are forever changed when such violence to comes to places that we hold as sacred and safe.

The time for action is now:

  • We need to ensure guns do not end up in the hands of people who should not have them. This looks like background checks, Red Flag temporary restraining orders, and holding manufacturers of ghost guns and 3-D printed guns accountable.
  • We must invest in mental health resources and services nationwide. A person who is homicidal and suicidal must be stopped prior to committing these unspeakable mass casualty events.
  • People in our community need to be informed on how to report suspicious activity to law enforcement, accompanied by swift action and response- either law enforcement or behavioral health engagement when those reports are made, depending on the severity.

My office is also working with legislators to enable effective punishment for crimes committed on these campuses. Our children and educators deserve better.

We must protect our children. We must protect our future. We must come together to end senseless violence.
