Jury Finds Correctional Officer Guilty On Sexual Assault Charges

Stockton - Today, San Joaquin County District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar announced that a jury found Zachary Simmons, a Correctional Officer with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, guilty of felony counts of sexual penetration with force or fear and sexual activity with a confined adult in a detention center, as well as a misdemeanor charge of communicating with a prisoner without consent.

"Rather than protect those in his care, Mr. Simmons abused these victims and exploited the authority he had over them," said District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar. "These women, no matter their circumstances, are victims of sexual assault. Whether it's violence at home or in a jail, as a community we must hold those accountable who harm and traumatize the most vulnerable among us."

According to court documents, the victims were sexually assaulted while incarcerated at the San Joaquin County Jail. Once this information was disclosed, San Joaquin County Sheriff's detectives in the sexual assault unit conducted an investigation. The case was then sent to the District Attorney's Office for review and prosecution. The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office would like to recognize the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office for their participation in the investigation, Deputy District Attorney Samagnya Duvvuri and District Attorney Investigator Larry Fluty for their dedication to seeking justice for the victims in this case.

Victims of sexual assault have immediate access to healing services through the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office and the San Joaquin County Family Justice Center. Partner agencies, including the Women's Center- Youth and Family Services, assist in the implementation of wellness programs that can vary from emergency shelter, medical assistance, counseling, case management, and more. In cases of domestic violence and sexual assault, a crime report is not necessary in order to receive wrap-around services.

The defendant Zachary Simmons returns before the Honorable Judge Richard Mallett for sentencing on November 8, 2021 at 1:30PM.
