Stockton - The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office, together with 41 other California District Attorneys and City Attorneys, have reached a settlement with Beauty Systems Group LLC and Sally Beauty Supply LLC, that includes over $1.9 million of civil penalties, supplemental environmental projects, and costs. Sally Beauty Supply has 492 facilities in California, including 13 facilities in San Joaquin County.
The settlement is the culmination of a civil enforcement investigation into Sally Beauty Supply stores' improper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous and waste products into company trash bins. Instead of being sent to authorized disposal sites, hazardous waste was unlawfully transported to area landfills. "It is imperative we hold businesses accountable for improper disposal of hazardous and waste products," said District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar.
Under the settlement, which includes a Final Judgment and Permanent Injunction against Beauty Systems Group LLC and Sally Beauty Supply LLC, the corporations must pay $1.6 million in civil penalties, $289,982 in costs and $25,000 in supplemental environmental projects. Under the terms of the settlement, Defendants must also implement certain compliance assurance programs.
In full cooperation with the People's investigation, California Sally Beauty Supply stores have adopted and implemented new policies and procedures and enhanced existing training programs designed to properly manage and dispose of hazardous waste products and confidential customer consumer information.
