Deborah Adams, 60, sent to State Prison for Embezzling $916k and Evading $16K in Tax Evasion

Today in San Joaquin County Superior Court, Dept 35, before Judge Ron Northup, Lodi Resident Deborah Veronica Adams, (Age 60, aka Deborah Castelan, and Deborah Domingo) was sentenced to California State Prison. Mrs. Adams previously pled guilty on November 10, 2016, to Felony Grand Theft, Felony Falsification of Corporate Books and on additional count of Felony Tax Evasion of State Income Taxes for tax years 2011, 2012, and 2013. She admitted to a sentence enhancement that the loss was in excess of a half million dollars. At sentencing today, the victim, Russell Horn of 3D Electric Co Inc., addressed Judge Northup about the devastating impact Mrs. Adams' crime had on him and the company. Adams was the bookkeeper at the Lodi firm for many years.

Judge Northup sentenced Deborah Adams to 3 years, four months in CA State Prison. The 40-month State Prison term was made after a pre-sentencing partial restitution payment of over $250,000. Judge Northup ordered the defendant to pay 3D Electric Inc. the remaining balance of their $916,756.72 in losses. She was also ordered to pay the California Tax Board in the amount of $16,276 in back taxes and interest, plus $21,282 in investigation costs.

The co-defendant, Denise Roman, who is Mrs. Adam's sister who worked with her at 3D Electric Company as the receptionist, also pled guilty on November 10, 2016, to Felony Theft and Felony Conspiracy charges. Denise Roman still awaits sentencing. Today, her sentencing hearing was continued to March 20, 2017.

The District Attorney's Office wishes to thank the Lodi Police Department, The California Franchise Tax Board's Investigations Division, and Steve Hoslett, CPA, for their work on this and other embezzlement cases. We urge the businesses in the community to impose strong accounting controls to detect thefts before the losses can occur.

Mrs. Adams is represented by Attorney Kirk McAllister of Modesto. Denise Roman is represented by Attorney Mary Ann Bird of Stockton.
