San Joaquin District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar announced today that on December 9, 2022, a $2.05 million stipulated judgment against The TJX Companies, Inc. (“TJX”) was entered by the Monterey County Superior Court. This settles allegations that TJX, which is based in Massachusetts and owns approximately 340 T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods stores in California, unlawfully disposed of hazardous waste. Seven TJX facilities are located in San Joaquin County.

On Monday, October 3, 2022, 5:30 thru 8:00 p.m., the San Joaquin County Opioid Safety Coalition (SJCOSC), San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) and San Joaquin County Public Health Services (SJCPHS) are hosting a virtual and in-person fentanyl awareness town hall at SJCOE’s Wentworth Education Center on 2707 Transworld Drive, Stockton, to provide information and resources on the fentanyl crisis afflicting our communities. The primary focus of the event is to educate youth ages 14 to 25 and their families on the dangers of fentanyl. The event will end with distribution of naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal drug, to the participants.

Today, District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar joined California Attorney General Rob Bonta, along with four partnering district attorneys, to announce an $8 million settlement with Safeway resolving allegations that the company violated state environmental laws while operating underground storage tank systems at its 71 gas stations across California. An investigation into Safeway's gas stations – branded as Safeway and Vons fuel stations – found a recurring failure to install, implement, and operate various spill prevention and safety measures since at least March 2015. Today’s settlement includes robust injunctive terms to improve operational safety and compliance with state laws to avoid potential contamination to soil and groundwater.
