Local Survivors Give Statements at the Golden State Killer's Sentencing

Stockton - Today, District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar had the honor of standing with Gay and Bob Hardwick, two local victims of Joseph DeAngelo, the murderer and rapist known as the Golden State Killer/East Area Rapist.  In the 1970s and 1980s, DeAngelo violated scores of innocent people throughout California.  The Hardwicks' world changed in 1978, when this monster breached their home and lives.  With investigatory developments, DeAngelo was identified and arrested in 2018.

On June 29, 2020, DeAngelo pled guilty to thirteen (13) counts of murder, admitted special circumstances to murder, and also pled to thirteen (13) counts of kidnapping.  His sentencing this week involves many victims of his unspeakable crimes, who have had the opportunity to tell their stories of both terror and triumph to the court.

"Gay and Bob were forced to live with a dark presence for more than forty years.  Their courage today - forty-two years later - is stronger than the horror of their experience.  Despite the evil DeAngelo perpetrated, the Hardwicks remained strong, stayed together, and raised a family of successful children, all of whom received degrees and have become leaders within their communities. Good triumphs over evil, even across a long arc," said District Attorney Verber Salazar.  "We will always stand with victims, no matter the timeline.  Your justice is our privilege to work for and witness."
