DA Verber Salazar Commends California Legislature on AB 331

IMAGE: Shoplifting Stockton - Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 331, a bill aimed at combating organized retail theft across the state, into law. Nationally, organized retail theft costs businesses tens of billions of dollars each year.

"We are grateful for the changes in the law regarding organized retail theft," said District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar. "AB 331 expands and enhances our abilities to investigate and prosecute these crimes. Organized retail theft is detrimental to our businesses who have already suffered tremendous loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic. My office is partnering with local law enforcement agencies to combat organized retail crimes in our community."

AB 331 reestablishes organized retail theft as a crime. Prosecutors can seek to charge the crime as either a misdemeanor or a felony and the law applies to those who conspire with others to steal merchandise from either a brick-and-mortar store or online.
