Annual Data Report
leadership of District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar, the San Joaquin County District
Attorney’s Office has released its first ever public data report.
The 2020 data report provides a
comprehensive review of the types of cases referred to the District Attorney’s
Office, from where the cases originate, and who is impacted by crime in our
community, either as a defendant or victim.
"Upon entering office in 2015, I made tracking data a priority," said District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar. “I am
proud to share this data report with the community. There has been a national
call for reform and sharing information with the public. It is important for criminal
justice agencies to practice transparency while strengthening public trust. My
office will continue to follow the evidence and uphold the law in a fair and
equitable manner. This data report reflects the high-standards of my office and

The San Joaquin County District
Attorney’s Office has compiled data to examine case trends in our community. Findings
were reviewed and vetted by the Data Committee and key community stakeholders.
These findings are being used to shape and guide policies for the District
Attorney’s Office to ensure public safety and implement “smart on crime”
strategies that compliment traditional prosecutorial approaches.
Key findings in the data report
- The number of criminal
cases referred by law enforcement dropped 13% in 2020, however, of cases filed,
felonies made up a larger proportion than in the past.
- In 2020, the
Victim-Witness Program served 14,000 individuals impacted by crime and facilitated
the return of approximately $1,600,000 to compensate victims on their journey
- The majority of
victims knew the defendant. 34% of victims were in an intimate relationship
with the defendant.
- Males accounted
for 79% of defendants, while 59% of victims were female.
