detectors contain small amounts of radioactive material and should be
disposed of as hazardous waste. Some smoke detectors may contain the
radioactive isotope called americium-241, a synthetic element related to

Disposal
The detector’s manufacturer is required by law to
properly dispose of radioactive material, so please send it back to the manufacturer. The manufacturer’s address should be
on the detector itself or included with the instructions/warranty. If
you can't find it, look up the manufacturer on the internet.
NON-RADIOACTIVE SMOKE DETECTORS (Do not have the radioactive symbol
pictured above)
Disposal
Smoke detectors that lack the radioactive symbol as pictured
above may be disposed of at San Joaquin County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
Facility for recycling and proper disposal.
There is NO COST for San
Joaquin County residents to drop off Non-Radioactive Smoke Detectors
at the HHW Facility for proper
disposal.
PLEASE DO NOT PLACE THESE ITEMS IN THE GARBAGE!
