Medical Sharps

Back to Material List

Medical Sharps:
In 2008 a new law took effect making it illegal to dispose of home-generated medical sharps in the trash.  It also requires used sharps, including syringes, hypodermic needles, lancets, and other needle devices for injecting medication or blood tests, to be transported in an FDA-approved biohazard sharps container.

There is NO COST for San Joaquin County residents to drop off these materials at the HHW Facility for proper disposal.

PLEASE DO NOT PLACE THESE ITEMS IN THE GARBAGE!

Where Can I Take Them for Proper Disposal?

Residents
Residents of San Joaquin County can utilize the following resources to properly dispose of medical sharps:

T
o safely dispose of your used sharps, place them in a biohazard sharps container and contact your physician, clinic, or local pharmacy, and ask if they have a sharps take-back program for their customers.  A list of sharps mail-back services is also available from the California Department of Public Health: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/medicalwaste/Pages/MailBackSharps.aspx.

Home-generated medical sharps may also be taken to the HHW Facility for proper disposal.  To protect facility technicians from needle-stick injuries, all sharps must be delivered in a sealed biohazard sharps container.  Sharps containers for residential use can be picked up free of charge at the HHW Facility Click the HHW link below for more information.
