Please Note:
The Human Resources Department is responsible to handle the application and initial testing processes rather than the Sheriff's Office.
 

Here are the Minimum Qualifications for Deputy Sheriff Trainee (entry level)
Be at least 21 years of age upon appointment.

  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License.
  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
  • Meet minimum standards required for Peace Officers as set forth in Section 1029 and 1031 of the Government Code (U.S. Citizenship and no felony convictions).
  • Pass background investigation conducted by Sheriff's Office.
  • Meet physical standards established for safety members.
  • Will be required to attend and successfully complete POST academy.

REQUIREMENTS for Deputy Sheriff
Be at least 21 years of age upon appointment.

  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License.
  • Meet minimum standards required for Peace Officers as set forth in Section 1029 and 1031 of the Government Code.
  • Pass background investigation conducted by Sheriff's Office.
  • Meet physical standards established for safety members.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must successfully complete a basic training academy as mandated by State Commission on Standards and Training, 832 Penal Code.
  • Must pass a probationary period of not less than twelve months.

REQUIREMENTS for Correctional Officer
Be at least 21 years of age upon appointment.

  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License.
  • Meet minimum standards required for Peace Officers as set forth in Section 1029 and 1031 of the Government Code.
  • Pass background investigation conducted by Sheriff's Office.
  • Meet physical standards established for safety members.
  • Must successfully complete a basic training course approved by the California State Board of Corrections within the first 12 months of employment.

REQUIREMENTS for Communications Dispatcher
Be at least 18 years of age upon appointment.

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Meet minimum standards required for Dispatchers as set forth by California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).
  • Must have (6) months performing journey level clerical work or operating multi-line telephone or radio communications systems, OR completion of 30 semester units from an accredited college / university, OR (1) year experience working in a law enforcement environment.
  • Pass a background investigation conducted by the Sheriff's Office.
  • Meet physical standards established for Dispatchers.
  • Be able to work rotating shifts on a 24/7 basis.
  • Must pass a probation period of not less than twelve months.

BENEFITS

Merit Salary Increases: 
Unless otherwise stated, salaries are on a 5-step range. After employees serve 52 weeks on each step of the range, they are eligible for a merit increase to the next step.

Deputy Sheriff I - II $1830 - $2453 $4374 - $5314  (DS II)
Correctional Officer $1744 - $2120 $3778 - $4593
Communications Dispatcher I - II $1314 - $1876 $3345 - $4064  (CD II)


Vacation
Maximum earned vacation is 10 days each year up to 3 years service; 15 days after 3 years; and 20 days after 12 years. Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year. Sick leave: A maximum of 12 working days of sick leave are earned each year - unlimited accumulation.

Health Insurance
The County provides employees with a choice of one of three Health Insurance Plans at no cost to the employee. Cost of dependent coverage is shared by the County and the Employee.

Dental Insurance
Two dental plans are available for County employees paid for by the County. Dependent coverage is available at the employee's expense.

Life Insurance
Employees with 1 year continuous service receive $1,000 life insurance; 3 to 4 years, $3,000; 5 to 9 years, $5,000; 10 or more years, $10,000. Premium is paid by the County.

Retirement Plan
County Employees Retirement Law of 1937. Employees who are members of the Retirement Association are also covered by Social Security except Safety Members.
