Micke Grove Zoo

Learning at the Zoo

MonkeyFrom a toddler's first glimpse of a monkey or snow leopard, to a researcher's study of gibbon vocalization - the Zoo is a unique learning center.  Much of the education taking place at Micke Grove Zoo is disguised as recreation. Family outings to enjoy Micke Grove Park and Zoo provide opportunities for interaction and for observing and learning about some of the amazing diversity to be seen in nature.

Elementary classes regularly tour the Zoo,
enabling young people to develop a better turtleunderstanding of animal groups and biological concepts. Area college and university students have found Micke Grove Zoo to be a valuable resource as a "living laboratory" for the study of animal behavior. Cooperative education programs have enabled college and university interns - in biological sciences, education, marketing and communications - to develop practical skills while assisting with Zoo projects.

Educational programming, Mountain lionincluding tours and presentations on the Zoo grounds and outreach efforts to area schools and community groups, have been a mainstay of Micke Grove Zoo's education efforts. Beginning with volunteer docent-led tours in 1980, programs include a broad range of specialized presentations that complement students' classroom experience.
