TIPS

There is a nationwide shortage of flu vaccine. The California Department of Health Services is working closely with local and federal agencies, vaccine manufacturers, and public and private health professionals to make sure that California obtains as much vaccine as possible and that available vaccine goes to those who need it most. The State Public Health Officer has issued an order telling all doctors and clinics to give available vaccine ONLY to those in the designated high risk groups.
If you are a healthy adult, we ask that you skip getting a flu shot this year so the vaccine can go to someone who is at higher risk of becoming seriously ill from the flu.

Ways to Prevent the Flu

Although a flu shot is your best protection from the flu—there are other good ways to help protect you and your loved ones from the flu:

• Wash your hands OFTEN with soap and water or hand sanitizer to help protect yourself from germs and viruses. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.

• When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, your sleeve, or your elbow.

• Stay healthy by eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, exercising regularly, and getting plenty of rest. If you smoke, now is a perfect time to stop.

• Keep up-to-date with your other immunizations and health measures.

• Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading germs to co-workers and friends. Keep children who are sick at home.
