Environmental Health Emergency Response Program

EHD staff is part of the interagency emergency response team for incidents involving hazardous material spills or releases. The EHD performs a health assessment to evaluate actual or potential environmental contamination and/or human exposure. The EHD provides recommendations for short and long-term cleanup and oversees the cleanup activities performed by the responsible parties or environmental assessment firms. Health follow-up of exposed individuals and their physicians is also conducted. Complaints regarding improper disposal of household hazardous waste are also investigated by the EHD.

Authority: California Health and Safety Code Sections 25200 et seq. and 101040
   
Funding: Hourly Rate and Service Fees, Fines and Penalties, General Fund.
   
Clients/Customers: Business and Property Owners/Operators, Law Enforcement Officials, Public Agencies, Contractors, General Public.
   
Workload: 90 Complaints/Incident Responses.
