In February 2006, the Denver, Colorado District Attorney's Office provided training for selected prosecutor's offices regarding their CASE Program, a proactive program to prevent victimization of senior citizens. Only 29 agencies from across the nation were chosen to participate in this training. The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office was fortunate enough to be one of those agencies.
The CASE program provides critical information necessary to keep senior citizens from becoming victims of fraud and abuse. This is accomplished by a partnership between the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office and organizations which provide services to senior citizens.
This effort requires no additional burdens on organizational staff. The District Attorney's Office staff provides the materials, the information and conducts the presentations at times convenient to the organization.
The District Attorney's Office publishes monthly Fraud Alerts, warning of the latest scams surfacing locally, statewide and nationally. Additionally, the District Attorney's Office is available to local organizations to conduct Power Against Fraud Seminars. These seminars provide information on a number of subjects including: how to protect yourself from physical and financial abuse, how to check credit reports, how to avoid telemarketing and online scams, and how to avoid investment scams.
Finally, the District Attorney's Office has a dedicated Elder Fraud Line (209) 468-2488. This is a phone number senior citizens can call to get a live person to assist them if they have been victimized, have any questions about the criminal justice system, or are in need of services.
