San Joaquin County Robert J. Cabral Agricultural Center Solar Electric Generating System Project – Phase One

A total of 680,000 kilowatt hours per year are estimated to be consumed at the Agricultural Center. The County will need an approximately 480 kilowatt (kW) system to offset the electrical usage. Based upon the roof plan and elevations, it is estimated that there is not sufficient space on the Main Building and Warehouse-Support Building for solar energy system projects. Placement of solar photovoltaic panels, mounted on covered parking structures in the Corporate Yard and Staff-Public Parking Areas, will maximize the system size.

Phase One Solar Energy Project: The County applied for a Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Economic Development Initiative (EDI) grant to build a solar electric generating system project at the Agricultural Center, and in August 2009 the County was notified of a HUD EDI grant. The project is a 63 kW (DC) roof mounted, fixed tilt solar electricity photovoltaic generating system on the roof of the Main Building. The Phase I project is anticipated to offset approximately 15% of the expected Agricultural Center’s electric usage.

Phase Two Solar Energy Project: It is anticipated that the County will pursue a Phase Two project, in the near future, for a solar electric generating system to be mounted on covered parking structures in the Corporate Yard, on covered parking structures in the Staff-Public Parking Area, and on the roof of the Warehouse-Support Building (if needed). The combined Phase One and Phase Two projects are anticipated to offset close to 100% of the Agricultural Center’s expected electric usage.
