NAME: AREA VI BOARD ON DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
COMPENSATION: None for meetings; receive actual & necessary expenses.
LEGAL AUTHORITY: Welfare & Institutions Code 4570--4613.
MEMBERSHIP, QUALIFICATIONS, & RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: The Area Board shall consist of 2 Voting Members APPOINTED by the Governing body of each County (Area VI has 5 Counties) & 5 Voting Members appointed by the Governor. Appointees shall be selected from among the following groups & to the extent feasible in the following proportions: a) Persons with developmental disabilities, the parents, guardians, or conservators of such persons 50%; b) Representatives of the general public 50%. Governing bodies of counties shall request recommendations from professional organizations, from organizations within the area representing persons with developmental disabilities, & from such organizations & agencies within the area that delivers to such persons. Per Welfare & Institutions Code 4578 - "Voting members of area boards shall not be employed as providers of service to persons with developmental disabilities, or be members of the governing board of any entity providing such service, when the service is funded in whole or in part with State funds".
TERM: 3 year term with staggered expiration dates. No member shall serve more than 2 consecutive 3-year terms. ALL TERMS TO EXPIRE DECEMBER 31ST.
DUTIES: The Area Board duties are extensive including responsibility in the area of protection & advocacy on behalf of the developmentally disabled persons, public information, review of policy & practice of public & private agencies, & related matters. Board Members are expected to attend Board Meetings & to participate on a Committee of the Board.
MEETING DATE & LOCATION: The meeting date is generally the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. every other month (6 meetings per year). The meeting place is rotated between each of the 5 Counties involved in the area (San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Amador, Calaveras, & Tuolumne).
